“ To think outside the paper ” : The case of Estonia

This article intends to give an overview of the lexicographic scene in Estonia from the perspective of modern lexicography, i.e. e-lexicography. We have been developing our in-house Dictionary Writing System EELex for some time already. However, the modern lexicography expects more: the multifunctionality of the database, special needs of the specific user, etc. I will briefly characterise some of the lexical resources of Estonian, tools for lexicographers, as well as some theoretical matters together with the issues of language technology, e.g. the concept-based method vs. word-based method (Tavast 2008) for compiling dictionaries. I will sum up with an overview of typical properties of online Estonian dictonaries.
